Our main goal as the design team was to create a book styled website that would showcase each story as best as possible. This resulted in the design team coming up with a book style website. Since volume 4 Horizonlines has been developed in Flash, so doing a book styled flash design was very possible.
At the time there were really only two versions of page flipping books for flash. We stumbled upon a rough open source version of a page flipping book that we managed to redesign and rewritten to suit our needs. Not long after the book was created and the flipping was perfected, it became apparent that with all the stories the book was going to be massive, and needed a quick way to navigate. A bookmark was created and used as a way to navigate the entire book quickly and easily.
For the staff section we thought it would be interesting to give the illusion of looking up from the book to a wall with the photos and biographies. In order to accomplish that we used photoshop to manipulate the images while using flash to move them, giving the desired effect.
The video section as created differently. After a few attempts to incorporate the videos into the book we decided to modernize the section a little bit and have the videos fade in within an organized and easily to navigate style.
- Written in Actionscript 2.0
- The original template was altered significantly to allow for larger pages and more content
- The bookmark was added with the ability to flip around the book from an external source
- Staff section starts with an image to give the "illusion" of the view looking up from the journal to the wall
- Issues arose when attempting to figure out individual staff images animations and leveling
- Went for a more modern layout
- In order to show the soundslides as large as I could, I had to display it out of the book
