The earliest idea we had for this volume of Horizonlines was to utilize a book as much as possible. We thought it would go together as a good theme to the volume's concentration as being a journal of "collected memories".

Seeing as how part of the stories focused on ghost towns, the design group wanted to use a background of an older wood table with a realistic looking journal. We lucked out in that one of our group members had just the thing and was able to take a ton of great photos we could use to assemble the basic structure using flash.

The inside pages of the book were created using photoshop along with the navigation bookmark. The staff section was created using elements of real photos merged together in photoshop as well. The video section was designed a little differently.

For the video section we wanted to be able to quickly jump from video to video in an easy manner. After a lot of trials trying to incorporate it into the book, we decided to create a separate section that was a little more modern.

The Journal
  • Overall design created with the magazines ghost town theme in mind
  • Book design based on an older journal style book
  • Image of the desk is an actual photo of a real desk, including lighting conditions
  • Journal was also an original photo of a book, Title added later
  • Journal pages were digitally created.
  • Each chapter contains a digitally edited photo from one of the Soundslides of that chapter
The Staff Section
  • Designed to look like a wall from a dilapidated deserted house
  • Created to display all the staff personnel and biographies
  • Design was based on the idea of a falling apart / broken wall
  • Original idea for staff member's photos were to wear clothing that matched the late 19th century time period
The Video Section
  • Created as a section to house all the videos / sound slides for the different stories
  • Developed with a more "modern" theme in mind
  • The journal was already loaded with almost 100 pages, so the idea of more pages for the videos didn't flow with the rest of the journal
