MIDI Made Easy was recorded in HD, over the course of 3 days at the Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM)'s recording studio. Due to scheduling conflicts, the actual recording took place on Saturday mornings over the course of several weeks. The equipment used to record the series was rented out from the university and included an HD camera, wireless microphones, and tripods.
Because of the tight recording schedule I didn't have much time to memorize and rehearse the script, so I built a "poor mans" teleprompter to ease the recording process. This involved a piece of Plexiglas attached to a broken chair with my laptop on it's back pointing up.
After filming, the editing took place on a Mac using Final Cut Pro. The entire series was scripted into multiple parts so editing only truly required cutting out bad shots, adding in any graphics and adjusting audio. Sadly the only lighting I had available was the studio lighting, which wasn't designed for filming. The last step was to prepare each segment for exporting to web, DVD and both HD formats.
- Written over the course of several days
- Aside from personal experience, research for the project began during the summer of 2008
- The research included over a dozen books and at least twice as many online sources
- Filmed on location at Minnesota State University Moorhead's studio
- The studio was only available for about two hours on sunday mornings, over the course of two weeks
- Being a one man crew, the ability to utilize multiple rooms of the studio wasn't possible
- Filmed in HD using a Sony HD Handycam
- The audio was recorded using wireless microphone system
- I custom built a teleprompter for use during the recording process
- Script was re-edited to work with the teleprompter
- Wireless mouse used to scroll script being projected on the teleprompter
- Filmed a total of four hours, over the course of two weekends
- Initial "screen tests" were taken to find optimal lighting levels and positions
- Problems arose during first days shooting that required the creation / use of a teleprompter
- Due to the condensed filming schedule the second day of shooting produced the best takes
- The second day also produced the most outtakes
- Raw footage was edited together using Final Cut Pro
- Title sequence was created using multiple programs including Livetype and Adobe CS
- Both Mac & PC footage was acquired using multiple screen capturing software
- Each video edited down into small segments to produce a multi part tutorial series
- Music for the title sequence was mixed together using Garageband and Protools
- Audio taken from the wireless mic was remixed to adjust for background noise
- End Credits music was arranged through Garageband
- Dubbed Audio was recorded seperately, then added in later
